Has your admiration for certain creatures increased after discovering amazing aspects of their life history? About half of shorebird species worldwide (oystercatchers, plovers, etc.) are long-distant migrants. They take advantage of long daylight hours and explosions of insects in the arctic tundra to nest and raise young. Each year they will migrate thousands of miles to wintering grounds in the Southern Hemisphere, then return in the Spring. Individual birds have repeated this trip for decades. For many species, Florida is either a destination or stopover to refuel and continue on. Either way, catching a shorebird pulling a long worm out of the sand highlights their tremendous energy need and astonishing journeys.
