Thunderstorms grow out of cumulonimbus clouds where positive and negative charges between the earth and clouds produce giant sparks of electricity, an electrostatic discharge of 100 million volts or more- that’s lightning. A single bolt can heat the surrounding air from 18,000 to 60,000 degrees Fahrenheit, producing a shockwave of superheated air- that’s thunder. It is hotter than the surface of the sun. I try to stay far away when I am shooting. But even at a safe distance every unique stroke of electricity paints an exciting image. It’s like Christmas; you never know what you’ll unwrap. Living in Florida, the lightning capital of the US, also produces lots of opportunity. Be safe.
